Welcome to the legacy of Romanovsky & Phillips

picture of Ron and PaulRomanovsky & Phillips began their career at San Francisco's Valencia Rose Cafe in 1982 as the musical break for Gay Comedy Open Mic Night before touring North America for almost two decades.

While Paul has put music on hold for the time being, Ron sporadically continues to compose, perform and record, as well as produce and star in a number of original music videos viewable right here and on YouTube.

His repertoire has expanded to include classic French music and accordion-based instrumentals in addition to the political satire and social commentary that R&P are known for.

Why I Created This Site

If you search “gay music history” online you’ll find all sorts of mentions of modern pop stars like Gaga, or ‘coded lyrics’ from Bronski Beat and Petshop Boys. A few places mention Olivia Records. They produced works by straight, lesbian and bisexual artists, but their focus was very much on the Womens Rights movement.

Songs that openly celebrated men living out of the Closet were rare.

Ron and Paul toured North America (to a lesser degree the various versions of The Flirtations did as well). They weren’t noticed by the mainstream, but they had a HUGE impact on so many folks of my generation. Much of their work is as meaningful now- not just as nostalgia. I’ve posted some thoughts on what has/ hasn’t changed over the years as reflected in the R&P catalogue.

For press clippings from their time on the road, check out the 1991 publication The Songs of Romanovsky & Phillips.

To hear (well, read) just a small sample of the impact R&P had, and has, on LGBT Communities around the world, visit the multiple pages of fanmail on their official website.

And so this website is home to my two projects honouring the musical and political impact of Ron & Paul:

Family of Lovers: Celebrating the Music of Romanovsky & Phillips

The real BIG DREAM is to have the music, the legacy, of Ron and Paul celebrated the way the recording industry does things- their works performed by a ‘cavalcade of stars’.

A truly major tribute would be a live concert later released as a concert DVD. In light of how many folks are resistant to taking COVID seriously, such an event is unlikely for years. A collection of multiple individual sessions is probably more doable. Having a CD of R&P covers by a mix of new and established singers (heavy on LGBT/Queer representation and activist performers) would still be a dream come true.

Who would I like to see? Well, I don’t really listen to many new ‘underground’ artists, but I’ve no doubt there are plenty of great singers who could do R&P’s catalogue justice. I do have a list of singers and songs on this page.

W I M P: Featuring the music of Romanovsky & Phillips

Wimp” tells the story of one man’s journey from lonely, nonathletic loner to out and proud gay young man in 18 songs. The total run-time for these songs, as recorded, is about 60 minutes.

This is not a work in progress. Rather, it’s an outline that a more qualified person can use to make a proposal to Ron Romanovsky for a musical theatrical production using the music and lyrics of Romanovsky & Phillips and Ron Romanovsky‘s solo albums.

It might also be a concert play list for a choral group or glee club- check with Ron for permissions and if he’s done any choral adaptations.

Visit this page for suggested songs and more information.
